Hawaiian Electric Company

Operating for the last 130 years, Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) provides power to 95% of Hawaii’s 1.4 million residents on the islands of Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island, and Molokai.
In support of the statewide goal to reach 100% renewable energy by 2045, Hawaiian Electric Company has reduced their carbon emissions by 23% over the last 10 years. With their commitment to sustainability, HECO has amassed 968 MW of solar capacity, setting a 34.5% consolidated renewable portfolio standard in 2020. HECO also set an internal initiative to fully electrify its passenger fleet by 2035, and sought a partner who understood their energy mix to optimize charging of its EVs. HECO chose bp pulse on a pilot project to manage charging infrastructure for four of its light-duty vehicles.
Customer Highlights

4 electric Utility Vehicles

Avg. 609.63 kWh/month

With funding and support from Elemental Excelerator, HECO partnered with bp pulse to manage the charging infrastructure for four of its electric vehicles as the initial step in electrifying their passenger fleet.

Our omega software will:

  • Test HECO’s load management capabilities
  • Track critical operations details
  • Help accelerate adoption of EVs
  • Support deployment of EVSE infrastructure
bp pulse will help inform the utility on how to appropriately scale and reach HECO’s goal of a fully electric fleet by 2035.

Additional support

Going the extra OpenADR mile

In addition to charge management services, we offered HECO a unique element – a customized partnership to utilize OpenADR, a demand response technology to optimize vehicle charging. Certified by the OpenADR Alliance, our cloud-management software platform uses secure, two-way OpenADR communication specifications, turning the EVs charging on the utility’s grid into a resource that can respond to energy demands in real time.
Transportation accounts for nearly two-thirds of imported petroleum and discharged over half of our greenhouse gas emissions. That makes this pilot an integral part of our effort to transition our own passenger vehicle fleet to electric by 2035, and bring carbon neutrality to our islands by 2045. We look forward to working with bp pulse and using the data collected to encourage other commercial fleets in the state to transition to electric as well.
