Anaheim Transportation Network

Anaheim Transportation Network (ATN) is a network of transit and micro-transit routes with services to major attractions like Disneyland Resort, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Angel Stadium.

With the ambition of becoming an all-electric bus fleet, ATN sought an energy provider with innovative technologies and services to help them achieve it. After a competitive selection process, ATN chose bp pulse for our comprehensive Charging-as-a-service support — including design, installation, equipment procurement, and fleet management. With bp pulse, ATN is estimated to save $4.8M more in fuel savings over 20 years as compared to liquid natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG).

Ongoing expertise and support

Backed by funding from the California Energy Commission, ATN had an ambitious vision for their facilities—a large-scale EV fleet charging depot, incorporating solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, and energy storage for resilient renewable energy. ATN knew that to build an EV fleet charging depot of this scale, they’d need the right fleet electrification experts.

bp pulse managed the design, construction, and deployment of the charging depot, all while coordinating the construction and EV battery experts contributing to the project. With our Charging-as-a-Service model, CapEx, OpEx and energy costs are also bundled in a fixed monthly rate, enabling ATN to streamline their costs.

bp pulse also procured Tesla Megapack battery storage and provided design and integration of a microgrid to allow ATN to use renewable energy and boost resiliency of their EV charging.

Efficient and cost-effective fleet charging

With the size of the large-scale fleet charging depot, ATN needed an efficient way to manage their charging. As construction and installation of the EV chargers took place, bp pulse ensured all chargers were configured with Omega charge management software. With Omega, ATN can monitor their EV fleet in real-time, as well as integrate their existing telematics and fleet management platforms for simplified charging operations.

Omega also:

  • Automates charging at lowest cost energy times
  • Accounts for ATN bus service availability requirements
  • Automatically ensures electrical demand does not exceed 2MW
  • Maintains fleet uptime

Innovating non-permanent charging solutions

As the project began, it became clear it would take longer to get the permanent, large-scale depot up and running while acquiring the funding and permits required. In the meantime, ATN would need non-permanent charging to power their fleet.

bp pulse designed and built a portable, pre-assembled, and containerized electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) solution. Two upcycled shipping containers were deployed by bp pulse, customized to ATN’s interim charging needs, allowing more time to get the permanent charging depot live.

Next stop for ATN

The work that’s been accomplished is just the first phase of bp pulse’s collaboration with ATN. There is currently a planned phase two and phase three of ATN’s electrification endeavors, to continue scaling up their EV charging operations. Future proofing is an essential component of this project—allowing ATN to take electrification in phases.

bp pulse has quickly integrated into our project and construction management team as a key member of the design build process. We are very pleased with their thought leadership and execution thus far and are excited for the installation of charging and solar infrastructure at our new facilities in Anaheim.
